The first time I played Dragon Age: Origins was on the Xbox and I had a hard time getting into it because of the crappy graphics. Well, I recently tried the PC version and discovered that OMFG THE GAME IS AMAZING WHEN YOU MOD IT TO DEATH! I highly encourage a playthrough with these mods if you haven’t done so already. Here is my list of the 31 best mods you never knew you needed (but now you can’t live without):
9 Mods for Better Gameplay
1. JB3 Textures
This mod gives HD textures to the whole game and makes DA much more beautiful. If you only download one mod, this should be it.
2. Dragon Age Redesigned
This mod redesigns over 500 NPCs in the game to make their appearance better. You can choose to change them based on Lore (characters redesigned to fit their races better) or Aesthetics (characters redesigned to be more attractive) or a combination of both. It also includes an optional Morrigan morph that makes her look more like her original face model (ie. super gorgeous).
3. Skip the Fade
Ugh, I hate the Fade. If you’re like me and just want to get on with the story, this is the perfect mod for you. It allows you to skip the boring parts of the Fade and go directly to your follower’s dreams and then fight the demon with all the Fade transformations already unlocked. You also get all the item drops using this mod, too!
4. Lock Bash
This lets any class unlock chests using strength or magic. This is great because I find the Rogue class rather useless in DA and hated having to take one with me.
5. Extra Dog Slot
Let’s you take your Mabari war hound as a 5th companion. Super useful.
6. Madd Gift Guide
You know when you have a gift in your inventory and have no idea who to give it to? This mod solves that problem by listing the appropriate gift receiver in the item description.
7. No Helmet Hack
This hack makes your helmet invisible unless you’re in a battle. Crucial if you want your character to look anything other than ridiculous during conversations.
8. Advanced Tactics
This mod expands your options for follower tactics so that you can improve your battle strategy. Super useful and allows your followers to make more intelligent tactical decisions.
9. Auto Loot Mod
Automatically adds items to your inventory when you’re looting – saves so much time and effort!
3 Mods for Better Character Customization
1. Pineappletree’s Vibrant Colors
Adds a bajillion new color options when customizing your character’s looks.
2. Hairstyle Day
Someone ported some beautiful hairstyles from The Sims to Dragon Age and they look great!
3. Whiten Teeth
Tired of your character looking like they’ve been chewing on dirt? This mod fixes the teeth for every character in the game.
7 Mods for Better Romances
1. Ser Gilmore NPC & Morph
This mod is amazing! It allows you to add Roland Gilmore as a follower (he is in the Cousland intro if you don’t remember him) and includes fully voiced banter and conversations, as well as the option to romance him. This mod is super well-done and feels as complete as any built-in follower storyline/romance. I like to pair it with the Handsome Ser Gilmore Morph to make the character better looking, because his default is a little homely :) You should also download Ser Gilmore’s First Night for a touching romance scene when you finally sleep with him.
2. Improved Romance Scenes
This allows you to do other things with your LI besides kiss them or have sex with them. You can give them a hug or spend quiet alone time under a tree and stuff – you know, normal things you would do IRL.
3. Better Sex Cutscenes
Bioware is a master at delivering epic romances … with awkward sex scenes. This mod allows you to change those sex scenes according to your taste for the explicit – you can choose from medium, mild and zesty (you can guess which one I picked!). NSFW
4. Rendezvous at the Tavern
Allows you to do more sexy times with your LI at the Gnawed Noble Tavern in Denerim – NSFW
5. More Options at the Pearl
Allows to do more sexy times with a whole range of NPCs at the Pearl in Denerim – literally, dozens of strange combinations that are often quite funny – super NSFW
6. Dahlyialynn’s Sleep Until Dawn
This mod allows you to sleep with your LI or Mabari in camp and wake up the next morning to daylight. Lots of cuddling involved in this one.
7. Realistic Look for Natural Bodies
This mod allows you to choose nude options for your character and followers – way better than the default granny panties or the standalone Natural Bodies mod. My favorites are the Theseus mod for men and the Seductress mod for women (if you opt for full nude, you can even choose what cup size you want for women and what penis size for men!).
3 Mods Just for Fun
1. Dance Party
These dances are hilarious! This keeps in the Bioware tradition of super awkward dancing and there are dozens of different combinations you can see.
2. Slap Morrigan
Sometimes Morrigan can be a bitch and sometimes I just want to slap the shit outta her. Someone out there made a mod to make my dreams come true.
3. A Little Leg
This makes all armor in the game a little more revealing to the degree of your taste. I like this mod because it’s not over the top sexual – it provides just the right amount of eye candy.
9 Mods for if You Love Alistair
1. Alistair Morph
This is the perfect mod if you want to enhance Alistair’s good looks without altering his fundamental appearance. Very subtle but makes all the difference.
2. A Hero’s Sacrifice
This adds a scene if your Warden/Alistair kills the Archdemon and dies.
3. Alistair’s Funeral & Funeral Kiss
This adds a much need funeral scene if Alistair kills the Archdemon and dies. The kiss version adds a scene where Alistair imparts a goodbye kiss at the Warden’s funeral if she dies after killing the Archdemon.
4. Dahlialynn’s First Night
Makes taking Alistair’s virginity super special :)
5. Last Night
If you choose not to do the Dark Ritual, Alistair will spend the night with your Warden instead.
6. The Proposal
If you choose to make yourself queen during the Landsmeet, Alistair will properly propose to you after the Coronation.
7. Dahlialynn’s Alistair Nightmare
This mod works in conjunction with the Sleep Until Dawn mod – if you go to bed in camp with Alistair a second time, he will awake one night with a nightmare – beautifully edited and emotionally charged scene that fits seamlessly within the main storyline.
8. Dahlialynn’s The Royal Wedding
This mod shows the Warden and Alistair’s wedding during the Epilogue – a gorgeous and lengthy production :)
9. Dark Ritual
This mod adds a scene between Morrigan and Alistair when it’s time to discuss the Dark Ritual. Quite touching on Alistair’s end.
Dragon Age Graphics EnhancementBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
Dragon Age Origins isn’t a new game. With that being said, its visuals may leave a bit to be desired by some looking for something a bit sharper. The Dragon Age Graphics Enhancement mod cleans up the look of the game with sharpening, saturation, anti-aliasing, and more. It provides a much crisper look for those who think the game is looking a bit dull.
You could never go wrong with some better visuals, and this is a perfect fix.
MetaGame ItemsBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
The MetaGame Items mod adds 10 items to your inventory that allow you to change and override certain elements of the game. These items allow you to revisit places, change your appearance, change your party, control romances, and more. All of the items included are:
The Phoenix Armory for FemalesBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
Now the vanilla armors are great and all, but nothing beats a hand crafted armor set that a dedicated modder has slaved over for hours.
What This kit contains:
Madd Gift GuideBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
The Madd Gift Guide is particularly useful for those trying to max out their relationships. Choosing the right gifts for people isn’t always the easiest thing, so this removes the confusion. Added to each gift item is the name of the person it’s intended for prior to its description. There is even added information for those items that are plot related.
No more confusion and having someone dislike your expensive gift.
Grey Warden Runic ArmorBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
Another gorgeous armor set. Like the one previous, this mod is very thematically friendly. There is nothing worse than out of place textures on mods. The creator this mod has kindly listed a few bugs and fixes,
Q: Armor and weapons lost after Dwarven noble origin.
A: Wait with adding the armor until you have finished the origin, then activate the mod.
Q: Separate items are not showing/looking wrong.
A Fallout 4 immersive mod. : There may be some conflicts with other mods (it is noticed it may not work with “Adonnay’s Weapon Replacer” and “Duncan’s Armor” mods).
Q: Armor and weapons do not appear.
A1: You have to deactivate mod before creating your character, after the character is created and game is saved you can activate it. A2: There is a rare chance that the mod may not work with some game versions, this is not a bug of the mod, this is a problem of your current game patch. In this case you may try to add the items through console commands by “Additem script” mod from this site (detailed instructions are in mod’s page). Extra Dog SlotBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
Want to bring your dog with you but don’t want to sacrifice another party member such as Wynne or Sten? The Extra Dog Slot mod will solve this problem for you. This mod turns your summon slot into a spot for your dog, with full control as if it were a normal party member.
That means you can take full advantage of his skills, while also interacting with him normally. You can send him away if you don’t need him, but a new Dog Whistle Item will let you call him back whenever you like.
Grey Wardens of FereldenBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
Another splendid weapon and armor set that is very lore friendly and looks like it belongs in the game. It is usable by all your party members as well so you can all strut around in matching swanky armor. There is nothing better in a tactics based game than coordination. This one has alternative versions to boot!
Texture Packs:
– Blight Buster Texture Pack: Screenshots here. – Blood Warden Texture Pack: Screenshots here – Dragon Knight Texture Pack: Screenshots here. – Grey Warden B Texture Pack: Screenshots here. – Trailer Warden Texture Pack: Screenshots here. Assassin Armor and Rapiers
There are quite a few armors available to players in Dragon Age: Origins, but not many are as sleek looking as players’s would like. It’s difficult to look exceptionally badass when playing as a Rogue, so the Assassin Armor and Rapiers mod helps out.
The mod includes leather armor for human’s only. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with other races. It also includes a set of Rapiers. Unlike standard swords, these are programmed as longer daggers, meaning they don’t rely on your strength stat. Instead, they rely on your dexterity.
Do note that you need to grab these items before the siege chapter. They were made for a new game, and you can miss the chest (located in the treasury room) that holds them.
Lock Bash
Having to invest in lock-picking skills can be a real pain. With all of your weaponry and spells, you should be able to open up anything in your way. The Lock Bash mod helps to make that happen. Players will now be able to break open locks and bash through doors in Dragon Age Origins.
The ability relies on your primary stat. The higher it is, the better your chance at bashing the lock and not breaking any items that may be in a chest. Also, this mod makes it so that you can order others to open a lock for you if they already have a skill. The added bonus of not having to constantly switch between characters is much appreciated.
Kirkwall Exports
Chances are if you have played Dragon Age: Origins, you have played its sequel. This mod adds some of the weapons and armor from Dragon Age 2. Best of both worlds, eh?
It needs to be noted that not all the armors are compatible with character variables like race and gender.
No Helmet Hack 1_6
Everyone gets sick of ugly helms. We’re forced to slather them all over our faces, and sometimes endure some horridly ugly headpieces in exchange for awesome stats. With this mod, you can disable your helmet’s visuals, and just stare at your beautiful face all day instead.
Armor of the Devout
This lovely armor set was tailor made for Leliana, however it can be used by anyone. This outfit does not have a helmet so it is best used in conjunction with the No Helmet mod mentioned earlier.
Armor of the Sten
This mod adds armor designed especially for Sten… to give him a bit more personality (No, not breasts). The collection gives Sten a more cultured look, if you’re not into his usual prison garb. These particular character based armors add a new depth to Bioware’s beloved characters.
Wings of Velvet
Wings of Velvet is a must have for any mage worth their salt. Look at it! It’s exceptional. It stands out, but not in a gaudy way. This one adds so much color and splendor to the magic wielders and, perhaps more rarely, a regality to the mage class. Anyone who has played Dragon Age: Origins knows that it is a rare notion to come by in the armors and the treatment of mages.
Armor of the Black Fox
Any budding rogue would kill to get their hands on this armor. The modder behind this awesome armor is kind enough to have told us the statistic values.
The armor and weapons have tier 7 base stats (tier 9 in Awakening) along with the following properties:
The Fox’s Arc: longbow
+3 dmg, rapid aim, +10% range crit
The Fox’s Wit: dagger (1H)
+2 dmg, +1 stam regen, interrupts casting
The Fox’s Betrayal: dagger (1H)
+2 dmg, +5% melee crit, +25% crit/back dmg
The Fox’s Chain: light armor chest
+4 dex, +4 cun, +2 stam regen, +15 phys resist
The Fox’s Boots: light armor boots
+2 cun, improved trap detection, +15% dodge
The Fox’s Gloves: light armor gloves
+2 dex, +2 armor pen, reduces hostility
Armor of the Black Fox set bonus: +3 dex, +3 cun
Corrupted Warden Armor
This sick looking armor set has been corrupted by the Fade. It sports a possessed look as well as several bonuses to the player. It does have a risk, though. Wearing this set is a risk to the character’s willpower, so keep that in mind. Making it a bit more special is the fact that it can be worn by anyone regardless of race, class, or gender.
The Corrupted Warden Armor set includes:
There is a set bonus for wearing all four armor items.
Advanced Tactics
The Advanced Tactics mod is perfect for players who like to have a much more fine-tuned experience when playing Dragon Age: Origins. The mod not only fixes bugs that are found in the vanilla version of the tactics mechanics, it also adds a plethora of new options. New qualifiers and factors were added in so you can prepare your party for literally any situation that may arise during your playthrough.
Skip the Fade
It turns out that there are a lot of people out there who aren’t fans of the Fade in Dragon Age: Origins. This demonic labyrinth brings the story to a screeching halt as you are tasked with escaping its confines. It’s a good thing that a modder felt the same way and created a means to skip the fade. This will fast forward you to each of your companion’s nightmares, collect all transformations for you, and take you to the final fight.
Auto Loot
Looting takes up a lot of a player’s time in any RPG, and it’s no different in Dragon Age: Origins. Having to take the time to send companions to do your bidding as well as open a few chests yourself can grow tiresome. The Auto Loot mod does all of the heavy lifting for you. It scans for lootable containers then automatically sends your companions to collect the spoils. If you have a rogue with you, it will even scan for locked containers. Not too shabby.
Improved Atmosphere
This particular mod doesn’t change gameplay, but it does allow for a much more immersive experience when you’re just lounging around. The Improved Atmosphere mod adds new items for NPCs to interact with, as well as increases the amount of people in the world. It helps to make the game feel more alive.
White Teeth
The White Teeth mod does nothing more than give characters white teeth. No longer will you have to act like you love a companion with horribly rotten dentistry.
Character Respecialization
This handy mod lets you respec both your created character and any party members. You can reset base attributes, specialization points, spells, talents and skills. You’ll have full access to every point you spent, and can redistribute them as you see fit. Perfect if you’re finding your characters didn’t quite turn out like you wanted.
Forced Deathblows
You know those flashy finishing moves in Dragon Age Origins? Well how would you like those to activate much more often. That’s exactly what this mod does. You can make it so only higher rank enemies get killed by a deathblow, or you can even set if so every single enemy ends with a deathblow.
Elvhenan Weapons
This mod gives you access to some powerful ancient elven weapons. The weapons are incredibly useful against darkspawn, with the weaken Darkwspawn skill on each and +6 damage to Darkspawn. For all the Darkspawn you run into in Origins, you’ll want one of these powerful weapons by your side.
Extended Dog Talents
If you’re loyal pooch is one of you’re favorite characters in battle this one’s for you. This Dragon Age: Origins mod add four additional talents on for your dog, two passive and two active. He gets a bonus to stamina and mental resistance, also getting a Frightening Howl skill and a Ferocious Bite one. Make your dog a powerhouse.
The Winter Forge
The Winter Forge give you an add-on that allows you to customize the magical elements of your weapons and their exterior appearance. If you’ve got a certain weapon or piece of armor you’re fond of, you can use this to customize its magical attributes to your hearts content and make it one of your best weapons.
Raptures Witcher
If one epic fantasy game just isn’t enough, you can add on items from the Witcher series to your Dragon Age experience. This mod adds on a myriad of weapons and options. Here’s what you can get.
Karmas Origins Companions
Even though you already have a pretty good selection of party members, you can add on even more. With this you get the ability to recruit Cullen, Jowan, Gorim, Ser Gilmore, Tamlen, Soris, and Leske into your party as permanent companion, and Recruit Adela, a new female companion, and Ox, a new male companion. In addition you get items and quests to go along with each.
Lighting Enhanced
It may not change gameplay at all, but there’s enough to be said for just making your game looking better, espcially if you apply this mod in tandem with others. By customizing the lighting, you can make you’re game that much better to look at. Here’s what it’s basically adding.
Tombs of the Undead
Tombs of the Undead adds on another entire section to the game. It’s a set of three challenging dungeons that scale in difficulty and level. If you’re prepared for the challenge, there’s fun to be had in the Tombs of the Undead.
SerenityStore
If you’re looking for an easy way to get the best equipment in Dragon Age Origins, look no farther than SerenityStore. This mod adds on a character named Serenity who’ll give you all of the best equipment in the game, along with a handy chest next to her to store it all in.
Spell School – Divine
This Dragon Age: Origins mod give mages access to another school of spells, Divine. This school focuses on healing, buffing and supporting with a few powerful spells for controlling evil mixed in.
Armor of the Elven Warden
This sleek looking suit of armor is themed around the elves new place in the Grey Wardens. There are both light and medium armors available, that also serve a place in the lore of Dragon Age Origins.
The Magic BoxBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
Another handy little items that lets you bring your favorite equipment up to your player level. Anyting set inside The Magic Box will automatically scale to whatever your current level is.
King Calenhad’s TombBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
This quest add-on give you the chance to explore the tomb of King Calenhad, after a mysterious earthquake has rocked the area around Lake Calenhad. It’s a fairly difficult adventure, meant for players at least at level 13.
Whispers of the LabyrinthBest Dragon Age Origins Mods
If you’re a mage player, this mod will give you some new robes based on the original concept art for mages in Dragon Age Origins. There’s also multiple different colors you can choose from.
Pints and Quarts Tavern
A tavern sits on the road east of Redcliffe Village, where with this mod you can pick up five fully voiced adventures and 15 new areas to explore. You do need to be level 17 as it’s intended for higher level players, so make sure you’re prepared before picking anything up.
Sacred Ashes CG Faces
This mod changes the faces of the Warden, Morrigan, Sten and Leliana to more closely resemble the impressive Sacred Ashes CG trailer for the game. You can use this to get a look closer to what the game originally looked like.
Pineappletrees Vibrant Colors
For all your customization needs, this mod adds on a ton of cosmetic changes for your character. You’ll have access to a staggering 48 new hair and eyebrow colors, 40 new skin tones, and 30 new eye colors.
Universal Dye Kit
For the ultimate customization experience, you can grab this dye kit and make all of your eqiupment look exactly like you want it to. You can even use it on your entire party, essentially making a team of Power Rangers if that’s what you want to do.
Expanded Inventory
One of the biggest problems in RPGs is alwasy running out of room in your inventory. This mod instantly upgrades your inventory from the normal 70 to a total of 125. Grab this along with the Auto Loot mod and you’ll be able to grab every item you want without issue.
More Hairstyles
Perhaps no RPG will launch with enough hairstyles to satisfy our needs, but thanks to this mod, you can make Dragon Age: Origins a veritable salon. It adds dozens of hairstyles for every kind of character. Whether you need a fancy braid or a cool ponytail, it’s likely to have an option that will please.
Morrigan Restoration Patch
We could all use a little more Morrigan in our lives. This mod offers a complete Morrigan overhaul, fixing many issues with her dialogue triggering and adding missing scenes that were cut from the game. Overall, you’re going to be getting a lot more of her in your life.
Equal Love
This romance mod is all about adding more love options. It removes all gender blocks to the romance paths of Dragon Age: Origins, letting any gender woo any other. Keep in mind that this mod does not remove class or race restrictions from the mix.
Dragon Age Redesigned
This is a huge overhaul that changes over 1,000 in-game NPCs to better fit into the Dragon Age lore. They receive adjustments to their textures, personalities, facial proportions, and more. As comprehensive and impressive as it is though, the creator has one word of advice: “It isn’t recommended to use this mod on your first time playing the game. Bioware placed a lot of time into the character designs and you may miss out on nuances and other features that the original game may have.”
Unlock Specializations
True to its name, this mod will unlock all specializations for you, giving you free reign to be the hero as you see fit. Simple, sweet, and effective. Spread your wings, and do all the things.
CHANGE YOUR HERO HAIR AND FACE ANYWHERE IN THE GAME
Have you ever been playing Dragon Age: Origins and suddenly, out of nowhere, realized your character’s appearance is utterly unacceptable? It happens. We can’t all stare at the same face for 30+ hours of adventure. For those times, bust out this mod, and change your appearance anywhere in the game.
More Readable Fonts and UI
Between tons of abilities, piles of armor, and racks of weapons, there’s a lot to read in Dragon Age: Origins, and not all of it is easy on the eyes. Text can appear small, cramped, and difficult to decipher given the intricate font. This mod will clear it all up a little, increasing text size and spacing so that you can spend less time squinting at your screen.
Dragon Age Class and Specialization Pack
Add 21 new specializations and 2 new classes to Dragon Age: Origins with this mod. Each has its own set of abilities to unlock — check out all the additions below.
New Specializations:
Arcane Archer (Warrior and Rogue)
Archmage (Mage) Black Flame Zealot (Rogue) Blackguard (Warrior and Warlock) Bladesinger (Warrior and Rogue) Daggerspell Caster (Rogue) Daggerspell Mage/Shaper (Mage) Dread Warlock (Warlock) Duskblade (Warrior and Warlock) Elemental Archer (Warrior, Rogue, and Mage) Essence Thief (Spirit Eater) Hellfire Warlock (Warlock) Hexblade (Mage and Warlock) Invisible Blade (Warrior and Rogue) Replicator (Ritualist) Spellcrafter (Ritualist) Swiftblade (Mage) Tempest (Warrior and Rogue) Weapon Master (Warrior) Whirling Dervish (Rogue) Wilderness Stalker (Rogue)
New Classes
Ritualist
Warlock Theta HD
Dragon Age: Origins doesn’t have mind-blowing textures, we can all admit that. They’re fairly low resolution, and can vary between objects in the world depending on their size. This mod adds better textures into the mix, making room for higher detail and more advanced lighting without causing performance problems.
Alistair’s Nightmare
This lore-friendly mod adds a new scene to the game, focusing solely on Alistair and his pains, fears, and thoughts following some tough in-game events. It’s not a huge addition, but a careful creation that fleshes out the motivations of this character.

This mod adds armor designed especially for Sten… to give him a bit more personality (No, not breasts). The collection gives Sten a more cultured look, if you’re not into his usual prison garb. These particular character based armors add a new depth to Bioware’s beloved characters.

Dragon Age Origins Mods DownloadsPineappletrees Vibrant Colors
For all your customization needs, this mod adds on a ton of cosmetic changes for your character. You’ll have access to a staggering 48 new hair and eyebrow colors, 40 new skin tones, and 30 new eye colors.
Universal Dye Kit
For the ultimate customization experience, you can grab this dye kit and make all of your eqiupment look exactly like you want it to. You can even use it on your entire party, essentially making a team of Power Rangers if that’s what you want to do.

Blood Magetypeeffectsdescription
Every mage can feel the dark lure of blood magic. Originally learned from demons, these dark rites tap into the power of blood, converting life into mana and giving the mage command over the minds of others. Such power comes with a price, though; a blood mage must sacrifice their own health, or the health of allies, to fuel these abilities
Blood Mage is one of the magespecializations in Dragon Age: Origins. Blood mages employ dark rites, originally taught to mortals by demons, in order to access more powerful magic. They must be willing to sacrifice their own life force or that of others in order to wield this power. Blood Mage spells Edit
Note: Blood Magic must be active for use of these spells.
Unlocking EditDragon Age: OriginsEdit
During the Arl of Redcliffe quest line, a mageWarden can unlock the specialization if they enter the Fade to confront the desire demon. No other class can unlock it (even if Jowan is authorized to send a non-mage Warden), nor can any NPC mage sent in the Warden's stead. At the end of this Fade episode, you'll meet up with the true form of the desire demon; if you elect to converse with it, and strike a deal, one of the rewards available is the Blood Mage specialization.
Additionally if you save before this final meeting, after you unlock the Blood Mage specialization you can revert to that save point. If your skill in persuasion is high enough you can intimidate the desire demon twice to get the ideal outcome. Converse with the desire demon, say that you want it to release the boy, say that you would need coaxing, ask what you would you give me, choose the (Intimidate) option, then select the (intimidate) option again, choose the 'Keep it simple. Something to increase my talents.' You will have saved Connor without the negative epilogue consequences, and recieved a Tome of Arcane Technique to further increase you power as a mage. (If you do decide to the original route of making a deal without replaying the conversation again, the plot results are the same as if you kill the demon – until the epilogue, which will reveal a different fate for Connor. (See here for the desire demon dialogue tree.)
Note: If you want the specialization but do not want to let the desire demon possess Connor, save before you confront the demon, accept the offer, then once you can, go back to the save then destroy the demon. You will still have the specialization unlocked when you reload your earlier save.

Note: Items that 'improve blood magic' do so by lowering the health cost to activate abilities while Blood Magic is active by 25% (after fatigue adjustment). This improvement does not stack; therefore wearing two or more of these items at once may be a nice style option, but is no more potent for purposes of the 'improvement'.
Specialization combinations EditArcane Warrior Edit
The Arcane Warrior is a particularly useful solution to a low mana pool. Constitution is highly recommended with this combination. Blood Wound is an excellent asset for the more offensive Arcane Warrior or a tank drawing threat.
Spirit Healer Edit
While it may seem counterintuitive, Blood Mage actually synergizes quite well with Spirit Healer. For this build, it is recommended that the Blood Mage keep the Cleansing Aura sustainable active at all times. Use mana to cast spells, and when it gets low, switch to Blood Magic. A healer's biggest concern is running out of mana, but with Blood Magic that won't be a problem. While it is true that Blood Magic greatly decreases the effectiveness of healing spells on the PC, the ability has a short cooldown. Thus, if you don't wish to use Blood Sacrifice, simply switch off Blood Magic and heal yourself. You will be able to switch it on again very shortly.
Shapeshifter Edit
After using certain spells including Blood Wound soon after, using Flying Swarm is a method of replenishing health to cast more spells after reverting to humanoid form.
Battlemage Edit
A potent combination with Blood Mage. A high constitution is highly recommended for this build. The Draining Aura sustainable is extremely powerful, and can greatly enhance survivability when surrounded by enemy mobs; the downside is that it consumes mana rapidly. Thus, an effective tactic can be to activate Draining Aura and Blood Magic. Draining Aura will use mana, while spells will use health. While it is true that Draining Aura will not restore nearly as much health, it will still stave off death for a long time when going toe-to-toe with mobs. With the Stoic passive, you should be getting mana every time you're damaged, so if health drops too low, simply switch off Blood Magic and let Draining Aura refill your health.
Keeper EditVery high AOE non-friendly-fire DPS is achievable when Blood Wound is coupled with One With Nature. To increase the damage further, with enough constitution, Nature's Vengeance can be used after the DoTs have been placed and the new Awakening spell Time Spiral can be used to plant yet another stackable Blood Wound and Nature's Vengeance if required. This technique becomes even more devastating with two mages and is likely safest with a rogue (for trap detecting as the mages need to get up close) and a tank (mages may still be vulnerable, after all they're expelling health). Using this strategy while wearing Spirit of the WoodsSpirit of the WoodsLight glovesDragonwing (Tier 8) Armor: 1.66 Fatigue: 1.25% +30% spirit resistance +30% spirit damage +30% nature resistance +30% nature damage would assist in steady damage output. Being a Dragon Age Origins Blood MageSo you’re playing a mage in Dragon Age Origins, and thinking about taking the Blood Mage specialization. This is one of the more interesting Dragon Age specializations, with clear strengths and weaknesses. On one hand the spells it grants you are very powerful, but on the other hand they subtract from your health instead of your mana. This is a great specialization for mages who tend to hang back away from the battle and not take much damage, while the tanks engage the enemy directly. That way when you run out of mana, you’ll have health points to spend on blood mage spells without putting yourself in too much danger. Alternately, specialize in blood mage and arcane warrior for a powerful mage tank. Dragon Age Origins Blood Mage Spells and BenefitsA blood mage gets a permanent +2 to constitution and +2 to spellpower, as well as the following tree of new mage spells. Blood Magic: This is a mode that allows you to spend health points on spells instead of mana. This applies to ordinary spells, and is necessary for the next three blood mage spells. A great option for those times when you run out of mana before the battle is over, and you’ve still got plenty of health. Unfortunately, any spells or effects cast on the blood mage while this mode is active will be less effective than normal Blood Sacrifice: A rather disturbing option, this spell allows you to drain health from one of your allies. You gain health at their expense, and if you drain too much the ally can die. A good option for mages who tend to find themselves in the middle of battle taking a lot of damage, or a last resort to keep your mage alive at the expense of a less valuable party member. Blood Wound: This is an area of effect spell, damaging all the enemies close to the caster and not harming any of the caster’s allies. It inflicts a good deal of damage and paralyzes enemies at the same time, unless they pass a physical resistance check. Certain creatures such as skeletons and wraiths that don’t have blood aren’t affected by this spell. This is a great spell to use on large groups of living enemies—anyone who’s played Dragon Age as a mage knows how useful AOE (area of effect) spells are. Blood Magic must be active to use this spell. Blood Control: The most powerful of the blood mage spells, this one allows you to take control of an enemy and make it fight for you (unless it passes a resistance check, of course). Even if they do pass the check they still take a good deal of damage. As with Blood Wound, however, creatures that don’t have blood aren’t affected. Blood Magic must be active to use this spell, and it can be a lifesaver if you manage to use it effectively on a high-level enemy. How to Unlock the Blood MageSpoiler Alert: This section contains spoilers for the Arl of Redcliffe quest. There is only one way to unlock this specialization, and it doesn’t involve a book or a party member. At the end of the Arl of Redcliff quest, when you are in the Fade and speaking with the Desire Demon who possessed Connor, you must not kill the demon. Instead, agree to the bargain she proposes and for your reward ask her for arcane secrets. This unlocks the Blood Mage specialization for you and everyone else in your party. Specialization CombinationsNow that you’re a blood mage, what second specialization should you take? Or if you’ve already taken a first specialization, is blood mage a good second choice? There isn’t one right answer—it depends on the kind of mage you want to be. Blood Mage + Arcane Warrior: This is one of the highest damage combinations in the game. This is for the mage who loves being at the center of the action and wants to become a powerful tank. Arcane warrior spells drain mana quickly, but being a blood mage solves that problem by allowing you to use your health instead for other spells. You’ll take a lot of damage, though, so be sure to bring plenty of health poultices and buff up your constitution and magic stats (high magic means poultices will heal you for more). Going strategically in and out of blood magic mode can also help control the level of damage you’ll take. Blood Mage + Spirit Healer: This combination results in a more balanced mage, one who can both heal and do a good deal of damage. You’ll want to spend more time on the edges of the battle, so you’re prepared to cast whichever of your spells is needed. You won’t be able to take as much damage, but blood mage spells except Blood Wound work just as well from a distance, and spirit healer is a powerful and extremely useful specialization to have. It’s highly recommended that you have at least one spirit healer in your party—if you’re a mage it makes sense to take it yourself. Blood Mage + Shapeshifter: You can’t cast spells while shapeshifted, nor can you be in blood magic mode. You could build a tank this way and go in and out of shapeshifted form and blood magic in turns, but this is a clumsy way to do things. These two specializations aren’t terrible together, but they don’t complement each other like blood mage and arcane warrior do, and shapeshifter is arguably the least powerful and useful of the specializations. So this combination is not recommended. The main use you might get out of it is blood magic + flying swarm: when you’re low on health from casting blood magic spells, switch to flying swarm and take damage to mana while regenerating health. Tips for Maximizing your Blood MageStats: Along with willpower and magic, put a lot of points into constitution. You’ll be using your health to cast spells, after all, and you’ll also want it to be very high if you intend to play as a tank. Combat Strategy: Use blood magic strategically, not all the time. Switch in and out of blood magic mode so you can balance casting regular spells and blood mage spells. This way, you won’t run completely out of health or mana. Also, you’ll want to be out of blood magic mode any time you need to heal yourself. Use blood magic on large groups of enemies, then switch to regular spells to finish them off. A particularly good strategy is to combine Blood Wound with spells that do lasting damage—the affected enemy will continue to take that damage while they’re paralyzed and can’t do anything about it. This post is part of the series: Dragon Age Origins Mage Specializations Guide
Trying to choose a Dragon Age mage specialization? This series covers all four possibilities–blood mage, shapeshifter, arcane warrior, and spirit healer. You’ll learn the strengths and weaknesses of each, as well as how to unlock and combine specializations.
